* Breaking * The groove
Hello everyone!
Superstitious, by the great Stevie Wonder. Notice how the bass and drums carry parts very "simple" (the quotes are to indicate that it is really difficult to have that shot) down even play a single note, every quarter. The drummer gives some licks on Charleston, but the kick and the snare are quadratissime. And here clavi
intervenes to break the groove, with some decidedly more intricate in terms of rhythm. The groove was born right there. The carpet, made up of bass and drums, and keyboard riffs to break the rhythm.
Let's take another example:
Sex Machine, James Brown. The situation is similar, but the tools are different and have different functions: here the drums and guitar are the carpet, playing repetitive and linear pieces (remember, it is impossible play with that shot) and the low was moving a lot, creating the groove. Note that the guitar part never changes (except on exchange B), and try to count how many times the drummer plays a dish that is not the Charleston ... surprised? :)
the next!
